A meal plan for shift workers and night shifts.
Night shifts, rotating schedules and 12-hour days make ordinary meal planning hard. Dinner might happen at 6 am, lunch at midnight, and the break room microwave becomes your main kitchen. A shift-work plan focuses on food that’s packable, reheats well and doesn’t depend on a fixed weekday routine.
This sample plan is built around five meals rather than five nights, so you can use it across any rotation. Each recipe makes at least two portions: one to eat at home and one to pack. Everything reheats well in a microwave and holds safely in an insulated bag with an ice pack. Flavors are bold enough to stay good after reheating, and proteins are sturdy: chicken thighs, salmon, lentils, chickpeas and eggs. If you’re managing a health condition or have questions about eating around shift work, your doctor or a registered dietitian can give individual advice.

- Wednesday35 min
Red lentil and spinach curry
Curry tastes better after a day in the fridge and survives any microwave.
- Thursday30 min
Turkey and black bean burrito bowls
Bowls pack neatly, and the salsa and yogurt keep in small containers.

Making this week your own.
If you share a household with people on regular schedules, cook a shared dinner on your days off and portion extras for your shifts. Family members can eat the same meals at normal times. Keep a simple list on the fridge of what’s ready to eat, so anyone at home knows what’s available and nothing gets forgotten at the back of a shelf.
When you finish a stretch of shifts, take stock of what’s left in the fridge and freezer before you plan the next round. Note which meals reheated best and which you got tired of, and adjust the rotation.
Tips that make this week work.
Plan by meal, not by day
Choose five meals for your stretch of shifts rather than assigning them to Monday through Friday. Eat them in whatever order the rotation allows.
Cook on your first day off
Use your first rested day off for a cooking session. Two or three dishes in double batches can cover an entire stretch of shifts.
Pack wet and crisp separately
Store dressings, sauces and crunchy toppings in separate small containers so meals taste fresh after hours in a bag.
Keep food cold until reheating
Use an insulated bag and ice pack, and refrigerate meals at work if you can. Reheat until steaming hot all the way through.
Questions, answered.
What should I eat on a night shift?
Planned, balanced meals you’ve cooked ahead tend to work better than vending machines and takeout. This page doesn’t give medical advice; for questions about eating around shift work, ask your doctor or a registered dietitian.
How long do packed meals keep?
Most cooked dinners keep three to four days in the fridge. Keep them cold until you reheat them, and reheat until steaming hot throughout.
Can ARK Table work with a rotating schedule?
Yes. You can plan a set of dinners without fixing them to days, and use ARK Table’s list to shop once for a full stretch of shifts.
