16:8 eating window · Adults only

A dinner plan for adults on a 16:8 eating window.

Some adults choose to eat within an eight-hour window each day, often called 16:8 intermittent fasting, with dinner as the last meal before the window closes. If that’s you, dinner matters: it needs to be filling, balanced and on the table at a predictable time. And if you have a family, it should be the same dinner everyone else eats.

Please read this first. This page is for healthy adults only. It isn’t for children, teenagers, anyone who is pregnant or breastfeeding, or anyone with a history of disordered eating, and it isn’t medical advice. Talk to your doctor before changing when you eat, especially if you take medication or have a health condition. This page makes no health or weight claims. The sample week below simply offers satisfying family dinners, built on fish, poultry, legumes, vegetables and whole grains, that work well as the final meal of an adult’s eating window, while kids eat on their normal schedule.

Making this week your own.

If you’re an adult following an eating window and you live with children, keep family dinners exactly as they would be otherwise, and avoid discussing fasting at the table. Children learn eating habits from adults, so it helps to model regular, relaxed family meals. If at any point fasting feels difficult or affects your mood, energy or relationship with food, stop and talk to your doctor.

This page doesn’t recommend fasting, and it doesn’t make any health or weight claims.

Everyone else at the table should keep their usual meal and snack routine, including breakfast.

Tips that make this week work.

  1. Talk to your doctor first

Before starting any eating-window routine, talk to your doctor, especially if you take medication, have a health condition, or have had issues with eating.

  2. Keep family meals normal

Children and teenagers should eat regular meals and snacks. Plan dinner for the family as usual; only the adult’s eating window changes.

  3. Fix a consistent dinner time

If your window closes at a set time, plan dinners that fit, and choose make-ahead dishes for nights that might run late.

  4. Build balanced plates

Include protein, vegetables, whole grains and a little olive oil or tahini, so the last meal of the day is satisfying.

Questions, answered.

Is 16:8 intermittent fasting right for me?

That’s a question for your doctor. This page isn’t medical advice and makes no health claims. It shouldn’t be followed by children, teenagers, anyone pregnant or breastfeeding, or anyone with a history of disordered eating.

Should my kids fast too?

No. Children and teenagers should eat regular meals and snacks. This page is for adults only, and family dinners stay the same for everyone.
