Heart-healthy-style eating

A heart-healthy-style family meal plan.

Public dietary guidance has, for years, pointed families toward a similar pattern of eating: plenty of vegetables, fruit, whole grains and legumes, fish a couple of times a week, poultry more often than red meat, olive and other vegetable oils instead of butter, and fewer heavily processed, salty foods. This page is a family meal plan built in that style.

To be clear about what it is and isn’t: it describes an eating pattern for weeknight dinners, not a medical diet, and ARK doesn’t claim any dinner improves your health. The sample week includes two fish dinners, two legume-based dinners and one poultry dinner, cooked with olive oil and seasoned with herbs, citrus, garlic and spices rather than a lot of salt. Every recipe is family-friendly. If you or someone in your family has a heart condition or has been given a specific diet by a care team, follow their guidance; it always comes before a meal plan.

Making this week your own.

Many families find this pattern easiest to adopt gradually: an extra legume dinner one week, fish twice the next, whole grains mixed into white the week after. Small, consistent changes are easier to keep than a complete overhaul. If you’ve been given specific guidance by your doctor or dietitian, share it with whoever cooks most often, so the whole household plans around it.

It also helps to look beyond dinner. Breakfasts, lunches and snacks shape the overall pattern too, so the same principles, more plants, more whole grains and fewer heavily processed foods, can guide the whole family’s week.

Tips that make this week work.

  1. Season with herbs, citrus and spice

Lemon, garlic, herbs, smoked paprika and cumin bring flavor so dishes don’t rely on salt. Taste before adding more.

  2. Choose whole grains most nights

Barley, farro, brown rice and whole-wheat pasta fit naturally into family dinners. Mix them half-and-half with white versions if kids are hesitant.

  3. Cook with olive or vegetable oils

Use olive oil for roasting and finishing and a neutral oil for high heat, in place of butter.

  4. Check labels on canned and packaged foods

Compare sodium on stock, canned beans and sauces, and choose lower-salt versions where you can. Rinsing canned beans also helps.
