An air fryer meal plan for families.
An air fryer is a small, powerful convection oven. It heats up fast, crisps food with very little oil and cooks proteins like salmon and chicken in minutes. The challenge for families is capacity: most baskets fit two to four portions at a time, so planning matters. The best air fryer dinners cook the protein in the air fryer and the side on the stovetop or in the oven, or cook in two quick batches.
This sample week uses the air fryer for the main protein on four nights, with simple sides, and one night where the air fryer cooks the whole dinner. Proteins include salmon, chicken thighs, tofu, chickpeas and white fish. Each recipe notes batch sizes for a family of four, assuming a basket of around five quarts. Larger dual-basket models can cook protein and vegetables at the same time. Shake or flip food halfway through and avoid overcrowding the basket for the crispiest results.

Making this week your own.
Air fryers vary in power and size, so recipe times are a guide. Check food a few minutes early the first time you cook something, and note what works in your model. For families, a larger or dual-basket air fryer is worth considering if you plan to use it often. Smaller baskets still work well for proteins, while sides go in the oven or on the stovetop.
The air fryer is also one of the best tools for reheating. Leftover fishcakes, patties and roasted vegetables come back crisp in a few minutes, rather than soft as they would from the microwave, which makes leftover nights much more appealing and helps food go further. Clean the basket after each use while it’s still warm; residue comes off far more easily and smoke stays down.
Tips that make this week work.
Plan for batches
Most baskets fit two to four portions. Cook in batches and keep the first warm in a low oven.
Don’t crowd the basket
Leave space for air to circulate. Crowding gives steamed, not crispy, food.
Shake or flip halfway
Turn food halfway through for even cooking and browning.
Use the oven for sides
Let the air fryer handle the protein and roast vegetables in the oven, or cook sides on the stovetop.
Preheat briefly
Many air fryers benefit from a three- to five-minute preheat, which gives a crispier result.
Questions, answered.

How long does salmon take in an air fryer?
Usually eight to ten minutes at around 400°F (200°C), depending on thickness. Check that it flakes easily.
